Summary

Most of us treat listening as passive — press play, and music simply happens in the background of a life. Chapter 1 dismantles that. When sound reaches your ears it does not stop at some audio department of the brain; it cascades across nearly everything at once — emotion, memory, movement, reward, language, and prediction. Music is the rare stimulus that lights up all of it simultaneously. That is why a Parkinson's patient who cannot walk can move to a beat, a stroke patient who has lost speech can still sing, and an Alzheimer's patient who no longer recognizes family can weep at the songs of their youth. As Dr. Barr puts it, this is not magic — it is anatomy.
